KINGSTON — A city councillor is to take another go at having the city designate the area around playgrounds and sports fields as child safety zones.
Almost two weeks ago, Sydenham Dist. Coun. Conny Glenn put forward a motion that would direct staff to study the potential of designating a 50-metre buffer zone around areas where children play.
The 50-metre zone would apply to “any public playground, school, daycare, splash pad, or organized children’s sports field” and would have prohibited “the erection of temporary shelters, the possession or use of drug-consumption paraphernalia, and open-air drug use.”
Glenn’s motion ran into opposition, primarily from other councillors concerned about unintended legal consequences.
