CHARLESTON, W.Va. — Gov. Patrick Morrisey said additional funds are being allocated to food banks for the weekend to coincide with approximately 144,000 households in West Virginia losing their SNAP benefits because of the federal government shutdown.
“We are sending out an additional $2.5 million today for the food banks so they can be well-positioned with the weekend to distribute more to the food pantries,” Morrisey said.
Morrisey’s move came at the same time Friday that two federal judges ruled that the Trump administration had to use emergency money to fund SNAP benefits for November. The immediate results of the rulings were unclear.
Morrisey said he decided to send out additional funds because he didn’t want residents to go hungry over the weekend.
