ARTESIA, N.M. (KRQE) — The Artesia Police Department is responding to an explosion at a local oil refinery on Friday morning. At this time, police are asking the public to stay away from the area of HF Sinclair Navajo Refinery at 501 E Main St.

According to police, thick smoke is coming from the plant and drifting across the city. The public is advised to shelter indoors if they are in the path of the smoke. Doors and windows should remain closed. Any locations impacted by this smoke should be avoided. The Eddy County Office of Emergency Management is asking people to avoid the area of First St. and Main, as well as Highway 82 and Bolton Rd. as medevac units are preparing to land in the area.
