A Barred Owl is on the road to recovery at Woodford Cedar Run Wildlife Refuge in Medford after being found entangled in a yard decoration containing fishing line, a fish hook and a sinker.

The owl was admitted this week to the refuge’s wildlife hospital with the hook embedded in her abdomen just above her cloaca, according to a social media update from the refuge.

While staff were able to extract the bird from the fishing line relatively easily, the hook presented a more complex challenge.

“The weight of the sinker was pulling on the hook, so our wildlife rehabilitators became creative with a special wrap to support it until she went to our veterinarian,” the refuge reported on social media.
