A federal judge in Massachusetts issued an order Friday stating that 25 states suing the Trump administration over failing to fund the nation’s low-income food program, known as the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program or SNAP, would likely win on the merits.
Simultaneously, a federal judge in Rhode Island ruled from the bench that the program must be funded using at least the contingency funds — and asked for an update on progress by Monday, court records show.
In Massachusetts, U.S. District Judge Indira Tawlani, in a 15-page order issued on Oct. 31, one day before benefits were set to expire, wrote that the administration was “required to use ... Contingency Funds as necessary for the SNAP program.”
