A Las Cruces jury found former Las Cruces Police Department officer Felipe Hernandez guilty of voluntary manslaughter with a firearm enhancement for the Oct. 3, 2023 shooting death of Teresa Gomez, choosing to find him not guilty of second-degree murder.

Hernandez's four-day trial came to a close on Oct. 30 after 3rd Judicial District Judge Richard Jacquez read the jury's verdict around 3:45 p.m. The jury began its deliberations after closing arguments at 11 a.m.

"It is very positive that the jury held Felipe Hernandez responsible for the death of (Teresa) Terry Leyva Gomez,” District Attorney Fernando Macias said in a statement. "We will be asking for a lengthy sentence, as permitted under the law. While it is difficult
