LOUISVILLE, Ky. — As the government shutdown continues into its 31st day , Kentucky's largest school district is giving families an important reminder.

On Friday, Jefferson County Public Schools (JCPS) said all students in the district will still receive a free breakfast and lunch at school.

The program isn't new -- but it's becoming vitally important for some families who rely on Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits.

Due the the shutdown, funding for SNAP is set to expire on Saturday, Nov. 1. Roughly 600,000 families in Kentucky rely on federal food assistance.

JCPS' "Community Eligibility Program" is funded through the U.S. Department of Agriculture and feeds lunch to about 80,000 students every day. The district said it's preparing to feed more students once
