VENICE, Fla. (WWSB) - It’s been almost two months since the Florida Department of Transportation removed all asphalt art from state sidewalks and crosswalks, but one local church is protesting.
Celebrating 30 years in Venice, SunCoast Metropolitan Community Church in Venice painted its sidewalk as a rainbow that leads directly into the church’s doors across from their parking lot.
“We want to paint a rainbow on the sidewalk that welcomes people into our church and says that you’re welcome here no matter who you are or who you love,” said the church’s pastor, the Rev. Nancy Wilson.
“The fact that the government would spend money erasing something that’s a cultural symbol of joy and inclusion is painful to us, and we wanted to do something joyful on our 30th anniversary,” said Wilson.
