BRADENTON, Fla. ( WWSB ) - With the arrival of the fifth week of the government shutdown, Suncoast residents are beginning to feel the effects first-hand.

And while food assistance programs like SNAP are being shut down, there’s room for local restaurants to step in and help.

Karen Jordan is the owner of Chicken Salad Chick in Bradenton and says it’s important to help the community in times like these.

“That’s worth it just to know I can help somebody,” she said. ”This is just something that’s gotten big and its great because we can help give to other people and I know growing up, my mom was on food stamps so I’ve been on the other side of that, and I don’t want any kid to have to go through that.”

Right now at Chicken Salad Chick, families can get one meal per child for dine-in only
