After spending millions of dollars in disaster recovery investigating a new road into a largely cut-off community near the Blue Mountains, a council is now reconsidering fixing the old one.
The Lithgow City Council (LCC) closed the only road into the Wolgan Valley in late 2022 due to the "high risk of harm" it said was posed by several landslides caused by wet weather.
A steep, four-wheel-drive route known as the Donkey Steps was created as an emergency access route for more than $4 million and has been the only way into the valley since.
Wolgan Valley Association president Andrew Chalk said the community was immensely frustrated that it took years before fixing the existing road was taken seriously.
"We're back at the point we were three years ago,"
he said.
