Tasmania Police are urging caution on the roads after two serious crashes and a fatality in the north.

They are asking drivers to be responsible and safe while travelling during the Recreation Day long weekend.

Acting Inspector Marty Parker said road safety was everyone's responsibility, and everyone needed to do their part.

"Tragically, we have already had one fatal crash and another serious injury crash in the north of the state yesterday," Acting Inspector Parker said.

Police said a 20-year-old man died following a crash on the Bass Highway near Elizabeth Town .

And one person was seriously injured in a two-vehicle crash on Chapel Road.
