With only a fraction of its usual staff, Yosemite has seen impacts, along with overcrowded trails. Volunteers and nonprofit workers are trying to maintain order and educate visitors, but even dedicated efforts can’t replace the expertise of trained park rangers. Former superintendents warn that keeping parks open without staff puts “America’s best idea” at risk, as Yosemite’s natural beauty and wildlife face increasing strain from unmanaged crowds and limited oversight.
