NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WSMV) - A Tennessee senator is pushing for more transparency and accountability in law enforcement following two former troopers saying DUI quotas and internal pressure led to the arrests of sober drivers in an update to WSMV4 Investigates’ Sobering Problem investigation.
Sen. Raumesh Akbari, the Tennessee Senate minority leader, introduced a bill aiming to find which police agencies are arresting sober people for DUI offenses in the state. Gov. Bill Lee signed that bill into law on May 2.
The bill requires the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation, each year, to not only document how many sober people are arrested for DUI, but also which police agencies are making the arrest.
