Chance Fischer ran for 305 yards and five touchdowns, both career highs, on 22 carries as sixth-seeded Bayonne overpowered third-seeded Elizabeth, 44-14, in the first round of the NJSIAA/Xfinity North Jersey, Section 2, Group 5 tournament at Williams Field in Elizabeth.
It is Bayonne’s first state tournament win since 2011.
Fischer, a senior, capped off the opening drive with a 1-yard TD run with 7:18 left in the first quarter. After an errant snap resulted in a safety, Bayonne (7-3) pushed the lead to 16 -0 when Fischer took a handoff down the right sideline for a 40-yard score with 3:38 remaining.
Unlike in the regular season, when Bayonne defeated Elizabeth, 26-21, on Sept. 5, the visiting Bees turned this game into a route in the third quarter.
Fischer had rushing TDs of 12 and 72
