A day of devotion turned into a nightmare in Andhra Pradesh’s Srikakulam district on Saturday when a stampede at the Sri Venkateswara Swamy temple in Kasibugga killed at least 10 people, most of them women.

The chaos unfolded during Ekadashi celebrations, when hundreds of devotees surged into a narrow corridor to offer prayers at the private hilltop shrine. The situation spiralled out of control after a metal railing gave way, trapping worshippers who had nowhere to move.

Disturbing videos from the scene showed scores of women clutching puja baskets, pressed shoulder to shoulder, screaming for help as the crowd pushed forward.
