LAWRENCE --- On a play 70 days in the making, Lawrence Central was two yards away from a sectional semifinal win over rival Lawrence North, the ball just outside the exact end zone the Wildcats scored a walk-off winner over the Bears 10 weeks earlier.
With a light rain coming down at the Ed Martin Automotive Dwaine Bell Stadium, LC quarterback Santana Allen took a shotgun snap. Allen surveyed the field briefly before scrambling up the middle. As the LN defense converged, the ball popped out of Allen's hands and rolled into the end zone, past five defenders, allowing running back Al Gooden III to fall on the fumble in the end zone for the winning score, sending LC to a 26-24 victory Friday night.
