Pierce Asfalg threw three first half touchdown passes, then ran for two scores in the second half to lead fourth-seeded Cedar Grove to a 35-20 victory over fifth-seeded Glen Ridge in the first round of the NJSIAA/Xfinity North Jersey, Group 1 tournament at Cedar Grove.
Asfalg, a senior, connected with Michael Ruggiano for a 43-yard catch and run for a TD that gave Cedar Grove (7-3) a 7-0 lead just 5:15 into the game.
Asfalg’s 17-yard TD pass to Michael Cantarelli in the slot snapped a 7-all tie and put Cedar Grove (7-3) ahead for good with 6:13 left in the second quarter. Then, with 55 seconds remaining, Asfalg and Xavier Andujar teamed up for a 30-yard TD pass that made it 21-7 heading into halftime.
