A Portage la Prairie-area domestic violence shelter is calling on the community to wear purple, raise awareness, and support survivors as November is recognized as Domestic Violence Awareness Month (DVAM).

Tara Hayes, Executive Director of Prairie Harbour Inc., said that while Mayor Sharilyn Knox is signing a declaration acknowledging the month, the public must take action to address the issue.

“DV affects every community. It’s an issue that thrives in silence and stigma,” Hayes said in a statement. “By recognizing November as DVAM, we invite people to start conversations to learn about warning signs and advocate for safer relationships.”
