The grudge match between Chelmsford City and Braintree Town boiled over after a moment of madness from Aidan Francis-Clarke.
The FA Cup first-round threw up an Essex derby between two local non-league rivals on Saturday live on TV.
Chelmsford from the ninth tier hosted National League side Braintree for a place in the second-round in front of a sold-out Melbourne Community Stadium.
And the 3,000 crowd witnessed a stunning upset as the ninth-tier side thrashed their neighbours 4-1.
Ex-Charlton and Nottingham Forest striker Lyle Taylor scored twice as Chelmsford secured the bragging rights and their name in the hat for the second round.
But the occasion threatened to turn ugly in the 60th minute when Braintree defender Francis-Clarke aimed an almighty kick at Jason Adigun.
