A member of LNER rail staff is in a life-threatening condition after intervening during a mass stabbing incident on a train. British Transport Police (BTP) have described the staff member's actions as "heroic," stating that he likely saved many lives during the attack. Five other casualties have been discharged from hospital following the incident, which occurred yesterday. The BTP confirmed that the rail worker attempted to stop the attacker and was injured in the process. A statement from the police noted, "Having viewed the CCTV from the train, the actions of the member of rail staff were nothing short of heroic and undoubtedly saved people's lives." Currently, a 32-year-old man is being treated as the sole suspect in the case. He was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder and remains in police custody. Another man, aged 35, who was also arrested at the scene, has been released without charge after it was determined he was not involved in the attack. A knife was recovered at the scene, and BTP Deputy Chief Constable Stuart Cundy stated, "Our investigation is moving at pace and we are confident we are not looking for anyone else in connection to the incident." He expressed his condolences to those affected, particularly the injured rail staff member and his family, who are receiving support from specialist officers. David Horne, Managing Director of LNER, expressed shock and sadness over the incident. He stated, "Our thoughts and prayers are with everyone affected, particularly our colleague who remains in a life-threatening condition, and their family." Horne also thanked the emergency services for their prompt response and acknowledged the bravery of the train's crew. The BTP is urging anyone with information about the incident to come forward by texting 61016 and quoting reference 663 of 01/11/25. The investigation continues as authorities work to support those impacted by this tragic event.
