Ihave a modest proposal for the fine people of our community: let’s rediscover the true purpose of the acceleration lane.

See, it’s right there in the name — acceleration . Not gentle meander lane . Not slow-motion merge experience .

The idea is to use that blessed stretch of pavement to, well, accelerate — ideally until you’re moving about the same speed as the traffic on the interstate. Then, and only then, do you merge.

Unfortunately, many drivers seem to believe the goal is to reach a solid 40 mph, flick on the blinker like a prayer flag and hope someone in a semi feels charitable.

Spoiler: that’s not how it works.

Think of it this way — merging at 40 into 75-mph traffic is like walking into a revolving door at half speed. You’re not being cautious; you’re being a physics
