Salford's Catholic Cathedral is currently undergoing an £18m repairs programme. Having survived two world wars, and remained defiant when, in the 1990s Chapel Street was desolate with boarded-up properties and vacant plots of land it is getting an urgently needed revamp.

The 177-year-old building is being restored to its former glory and is scheduled to be complete by Easter 2026 after closing in March 2023.

But two miles up the road in Higher Broughton Catholics fear their place of worship which has been at the heart of thousands of families' histories for more than a century could be under threat.
