We heard that refrain more than once last NHL season when Quinn Hughes returned from injury to give the Vancouver Canucks a fighting chance to beat playoff odds, especially in late March when wild-card positioning math wasn’t adding up.

Hughes is expected to find himself in a similar situation Monday in Nashville.

Yes, it’s early, but being below the .500 performance bar with a 6-7-0 record is only placing more pressure on the injury-ravaged Canucks — and their best player — to gut out victories minus eight players. And because we’ve yet to see Hughes at his best in a ridiculously condensed schedule that invites fatigue and injuries, what should we expect against the Predators?
