FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. (KNWA/KFTA) — Nothing's spookier than a rotting pumpkin.
In a Facebook post, the City of Fayetteville reminded residents that their food waste drop-off locations can turn pumpkins, jack-o-lanterns and gourds into compost rather than sending them to landfills.
According to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), when pumpkins decompose in landfills, they produce methane, a greenhouse gas. Composting pumpkins converts them into nutrient-rich composting material that can be used in gardens.
The City of Fayetteville said pumpkins can be dropped off at two 24/7 food waste recycling locations: • Marion Orton Recycling Center • Happy Hollow Recycling Center
Pumpkins or other gourds that have been painted or still have decorations on them cannot be composted.
