EAST FLATBUSH, Brooklyn (PIX11) — In the East Flatbush section of Brooklyn known as "Little Caribbean," you don't have to be Jamaican to help out in this Hurricane Melissa relief effort.
At Saint Lucia's Community Center on East 49th Street, volunteers were bringing bags upon bags of donated items to help in the relief effort on Sunday.
After the worst hurricane in 174 years hit Jamaica on Tuesday, streets were left flooded, homes, schools and hospitals were destroyed.
Volunteers have been collecting essential items from the Brooklyn neighborhood: bed sheets, first aid kits, towels, flashlights, batteries, toiletries and others.
"Jamaica is in a very bad situation at the moment," Jamaican Consulate General Spokesperson Chris Benjamin said. "But, at the same time, we have very resilient
