The misplaced arteries in Edwin Diaz’s heart have followed him throughout life.

Seemingly endless hospital visits, stress tests and a year spent in school with cables strewn around his body to monitor cardiac activity — a lengthy ordeal that kept him from living his fullest life as a kid who loved sports.

But the 17-year-old Capital High School student remembers something positive about the time, too.

After open heart surgery at the age of 7 to correct nature’s misstep, he recalled a “shining brightness” on his mother’s face upon learning her only child had survived such an invasive operation.
