Police are investigating a shooting early Sunday, Nov. 2 at a home in Ohio rented through Airbnb where multiple individuals were wounded during a party that had been promoted on social media.
Officers responded at around midnight to reports of gunfire at a residence in the 900 block of Top Of The Hill Drive, Bath Township, near Akron, the Bath Township Police Department said in a statement. A large group of people, mainly juveniles, had gathered for a birthday party when one or more suspects fired several shots inside the home before fleeing.
During a press conference Sunday morning, Bath Police Chief Vito Sinopoli confirmed that there were nine individuals — adults and juveniles — who were reported injured at the party. He added that not all were wounded by bullets; one sustained a leg injury after falling.
Sinopoli said he could not confirm the severity of the injuries, the condition of those who were transported, nor how many had been at the party.
A suspect or suspects has not been arrested. As of 10:30 a.m. Sunday the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation was still on the scene.
Sinopoli said the event was for a birthday party that was promoted on social media. The majority of those at the party were younger than 18.
Emergency responders from multiple police and fire departments across Summit County and neighboring communities provided life-saving care and took the victims to area hospitals.
Where did the Airbnb shooting happen?
The house is located in an upscale area of Bath with million dollar-plus homes, according to Summit County Fiscal Office records.
Sinopoli said the incident occurred "in a very large home," and that the majority of the shots were on the first floor of the residence. He added that the township zoning prohibits short-term rentals but that this is a zoning violation, and short-term rentals would not result in a criminal charge.
The owner of the property is aware of the incident, Sinopoli said.
The 5,321-square-foot, contemporary-style stucco home has an appraised value of $1.1 million, according to Summit County Fiscal Office records. It was registered with the county as a rental home in August 2016.
The property owner of record lists a Nevada mailing address with the fiscal office.
The house was built in 2001 and remodeled in 2017, according to fiscal office records. The five-bedroom home includes a 2,074-square-foot recreation room and four fireplaces.
Bath Township police is working with BCI to process the scene and collect evidence, Sinopoli said.
The caliber of gun used has not been determined.
Airbnb suspends listing pending investigation
A spokesman with Airbnb said that the listing has been suspended from its platform as investigations continue.
"We are heartbroken by this senseless act of gun violence, and our thoughts are with the injured victims and all those affected by it," the spokesman stated in a Nov. 2 email. "Unauthorized and disruptive gatherings are strictly prohibited on Airbnb and our safety team acted immediately to remove the account of the individual who deliberately broke those rules by booking this stay. Our law enforcement response team is in contact with the chief of Bath Township Police Department to assist their ongoing investigation to ensure those responsible for this terrible incident are brought to justice.”
Bath Police Chief Vito Sinopoli decries shooting at home
"This kind of violence is unacceptable in our community," Sinopoli said. "We are committed to applying all available resources to this investigation." He added that parents should be aware of their children's activities and to be wary if they say they want to go out to a party they saw advertised on social media.
Police said the investigation remains active and urged anyone with information to contact the Bath Township Police Department Detective Bureau at 330-666-3736.
Akron Mayor Shammas Malik offers support in investigation
Akron Mayor Shammas Malik said in a social media post that Akron's safety forces will assist Bath with its investigation.
"Those who perpetrate violence anywhere in our community must be held accountable for their actions," Malik stated. "This kind of deadly behavior cannot be normalized."
Malik also said that he was concerned about hearing "the reports of so many young people at a rented house party."
"It appears to be part of a broader issue - helping make sure youth across our community are safe," Malik said in his statement. "There is a significant role for parents in this regard, and there is a significant role for government."
A 2017 shooting at Airbnb home in Bath left teen injured
This isn’t the first time a party at an Airbnb home in Bath has ended in gunfire.
In July 2017, a 17-year-old male from Cleveland was struck in the knee by a bullet in an apparent drive-by shooting at a large party in a rented vacation home.
The incident occurred after a Bedford woman rented a Sourek Road house on Airbnb and posted a flyer on social media advertising a party. No more than 20 people were supposed to be at the house, per the rental contract. But police said about 300 people, mostly in their 20s, showed up.
The woman who rented the house was permanently banned from Airbnb, and Airbnb said it would reimburse the homeowner for minor damage to her home under its $1 million host guarantee, a spokesperson told the Beacon Journal.
