Cambridge is looking to take property enforcement into its own hands.
Under a newly proposed property standards bylaw, city officials could issue fines directly and, if needed, step in to repair or even demolish buildings. This will give the city more control and power over problem properties.
Previously, when a complaint was made about a property’s condition, city officials would inspect the site and issue a notice of violation if required, which would then have to go through the provincial court. But the proposed changes will keep things local.
They would bring the city’s property standards and lot maintenance bylaws under Cambridge’s administrative penalty system, a process that lets the city issue and handle tickets on its own.
