Coquitlam councillor Craig Hodge says almost a quarter of his city’s landfill is taken up by construction and demolition waste.
Much of it comes from houses that are being torn down for condos or apartments. He estimates there are about 600 houses in Coquitlam alone that will come down for redevelopment in the next few years.
“Those homes are all in places that are zoned for a higher density, so eventually they will come down,” he said.
He thinks tearing them down is a waste, which is why he’s become a champion of preserving homes by moving them.
“It doesn’t make any sense that we’re crushing these houses and putting them into the landfill in the middle of a housing crisis,” he said.
Bur saving houses slated for demolition from the garbage dump isn’t easy.
