Under clear blue skies, thousands of runners ran their way over the Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge and through Brooklyn to compete in the TCS New York City Marathon on Sunday.
More than 55,000 runners crossed the finish line, according to marathon organizer New York Road Runners .
Hellen Obiri of Kenya set a women’s course record to finish the race in 2 hours, 19 minutes and 51 seconds. Benson Kipruto, also of Kenya, won the men’s race by edging out Alexander Mutiso by a hair. Kipruto finished in 2 hours, 8 minutes and 9 seconds.
The temperature was in the mid-50s Fahrenheit when the race started, making the 26.2 mile race just a bit easier for the runners.
