A violent thug who launched a frenzied attack with a SPADE in a bustling city centre before being tackled to the ground has been locked up.

Jamie Birks, 38, snatched the shovel from a council worker's trolley before lashing out at advertising boards in Derby.

Disturbing footage captures him brandishing it above his head as he rampages down St Peter's Street on September 26.

Multiple bystanders move closer to him, including a man wearing a black hoodie.

Birks swipes the spade in his direction, forcing him to briefly retreat.
