A judge has approved a plea to a lesser charge by a former deputy chief with the Ottawa Police Service (OPS) who was accused of sexually assaulting a female colleague 14 years ago.

Last summer, Ontario's Special Investigations Unit (SIU) charged Uday Jaswal over the 2011 incident.

Jaswal, who was an acting inspector at the time, met the woman at his office while both were on duty. They consumed some alcohol and engaged in sexual activity, according to the agreed statement of facts read out in court Monday.

The OPS reported the incident to the SIU in March 2023.

On Monday, Justice Robert Horton accepted a joint submission from Crown and defence lawyers that saw Jaswal plead guilty to a charge of breast of trust. Jaswal maintains the sex was consensual.
