Dafen CP School in Llanelli, Wales, was placed on lockdown following a serious threat indicating that individuals armed with knives would attend the premises. The decision to close the school was made on Monday after threatening messages were received online overnight.
Dyfed-Powys Police confirmed that a "critical incident" had been declared. A significant police presence was observed at the school throughout the day, with at least 13 police units deployed, including a firearms unit, dog unit, neighbourhood policing teams, and response officers.
A police spokesperson stated, "We are now able to disclose that the threat against Dafen CP School was received online and suggested individuals attending the school with knives on Monday." The threat was initially reported to the Metropolitan Police and was passed to Dyfed-Powys Police at 2.30am on the same day.
Investigators worked to assess the credibility of the threat, which was confirmed to have originated from a single anonymous source. Police indicated that there was no additional information to substantiate the threat. Superintendent Chris Neve addressed the community's concerns, stating, "We recognise the concern among families of children who attend Dafen CP School, and the wider community today, and apologise we have not been in a position to provide this detail any sooner."
After extensive inquiries by specialist investigators, the risk was deemed to have passed, and police confirmed that there is no ongoing investigation. They reassured the public, saying, "We have no reason to believe there is a risk to anyone living in the area surrounding the school, other schools, or the wider Llanelli area."
Despite the resolution of the incident, police will maintain an increased presence at Dafen CP School and in the surrounding area to provide reassurance to the community. Superintendent Neve added, "You will continue to see an increased police presence at Dafen CP School and the surrounding area throughout this evening, with teams also attending schools in the wider Llanelli area to provide reassurance, tomorrow." No further details regarding the nature of the threat have been released as investigations continue to ensure community safety.
