Some questions being raised about water transfers
Municipalities and irrigators say they’re pleased with changes to the Water Act the Alberta government is proposing to make.
The province says Bill 7, the Water Amendment Act, tabled Thursday, needs a significant update to address the province’s growth as well as water shortages that parts of Alberta have experienced in recent years. The legislation has not seen a significant update since 1999, it says.

Rural Municipalities of Alberta President Kara Westerlund said the organization, which represents about 70 municipal districts and counties, is “cautiously optimistic” the proposed legislation will have positive effects on the landscape.
“There will be opportunity for economic development that this opens up,” she said
