Washington Commanders coach Dan Quinn admitted on Monday that quarterback Jayden Daniels shouldn't have still been playing in the Sunday night game where he suffered his elbow injury.
Daniels indeed suffered a nasty dislocated elbow in the fourth quarter of his team's blowout home loss to the Seattle Seahawks, at a point when the game looked essentially out of reach.
Why make the decision to keep Daniels in the game at that point? Well, Quinn explained that the fourth-quarter sequence in question was the last drive for a number of Commanders starters on offense, including Daniels, and that the offensive plan didn't call for any quarterback carries.
However, Quinn said he still feels he didn't make the right call.
"Honestly, man, that's where I missed it," Quinn said on his decision to not park Daniels before that fateful drive. "Of course he could scramble; it's Jayden. It's what he's special at, and that is 100-percent, that's on me."
Daniels will miss a good bit of time with the injury, per Quinn, making the decision to keep him in the game all the more questionable.
While an improbable comeback was technically possible, Daniels has taken too many injuries as it is this season to leave him in during garbage time. It's understandable for Quinn to want Washington to push as far as it could, but if the team was planning on pulling the starters eventually, the drive in question probably wasn't worth it.
For now, Quinn will have to live with his decision and hope Daniels recovers as quickly as possibly as Washington turns to quarterback Marcus Mariota to help salvage their season.
