Xcel Energy has updated its plans for a series of major battery storage and solar projects in Minnesota, centering on its Sherco site in Becker and its facility in Shakopee.

Minnesota's largest electricity provider announced Monday that it has filed a proposal with the Minnesota Public Utilities Commission (PUC) to add 600 megawatts of battery storage on a site adjacent to its Sherco coal plant, which will be decommissioned entirely by 2030.

That is double the 300 MW storage previously approved by the PUC, which would enable Xcel to store up to 200 hours of energy from its wind, solar, nuclear and natural gas facilities that can be deployed at peak times or when weather variability impacts renewable generation.
