Sault Ste. Marie Police Service has activated 30 closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras across the city to strengthen public safety and assist investigations.

The initiative, first announced last year, was funded through a provincial grant aimed at supporting police modernization projects. The roughly $150,000 grant covered the cost of purchasing the cameras.

Cameras have been installed in front of long-term care facilities, at major intersections, and in high-traffic areas identified through collision and crime data.

“This will be an excellent asset for us — not only to gather information and locate missing individuals, but also to strengthen investigations across the community,” police chief Brent Duguay said during Monday’s announcement.
