A Lake Superior coal transportation hub that handles million tons of coal annually will end operations in 2026.
Midwest Energy Resources Company will not renew the Superior Midwest Energy Terminal's lease, which is up June 30, according to parent company DTE Electric.
"MERC has been a valuable part of DTE’s operations for many years. However, as we adapt to changing energy needs, continuing its operations just doesn’t align with our business direction," DTE Electric shared in a statement.
The Superior Midwest Energy Terminal opened in 1976, according to the Duluth News Tribune, which reported in 2009 that the facility was moving more coal each year than all other Great Lakes docks combined, with 23 million tons handled in 2008.
