CAMPBELL, Ohio (WKBN) -- Voters in Campbell have a choice to make: whether or not there should be a change to the city's charter covering the appointment of a new police chief.
The current charter language gives sole authority over the hiring -- and firing -- of a police chief to the mayor. But a new proposal would allow the mayor to nominate his or her chief, who would then have to be approved by a majority on the city council.
Current Mayor George Levendis said the change is not meant to dilute the mayor's authority, but to add some checks and balances to the process.
It just kind of adds an extra layer of oversight," Levendis said. "Making sure that the choice reflects the community standards, not just the mayor's preference. So that's what we're trying to put on the ballot."
