MANHATTAN (WPIX) — The TCS New York City Marathon took a troubling turn for a woman running to raise money and awareness for cancer research.
Liz Healy has been fighting cancer since 2022, when a ski accident led her to the hospital, where cancer was discovered throughout her body.
"We decided to fight like heck to live," she said.
On Sunday, she set out to run the marathon for the fourth time -- this time part of a team that raised $170,000 for cancer research.
But she didn't make it past mile 12 - that’s when her leg gave out. A trip to the ER revealed a diagnosis she feared.
“A new bone metastasis in femur And bone fracture at that site on femur,” she said.
On Monday, she underwent surgery.
