HOUSTON — With the federal government shutdown creating uncertainty for families who rely on SNAP benefits, Houston ISD has expanded its free meal programs to make to support students.
Starting this week, every HISD campus will ensure students can eat a free breakfast when they arrive at school, even allowing kids to take meals to class if needed.
In a press release, district leaders said the change is part of a broader effort to remove barriers to food access as families face financial strain.
“By creating more flexibility around breakfast service, we’re making sure students can start their mornings with a healthy meal and a positive mindset," said Betti Wiggins, HISD Deputy Chief of Nutrition Services.
At Wainwright Elementary, cafeteria staff say they’ve already seen demand grow.
