HAMLIN TOWNSHIP, MI – Learn about the three Bs of wintertime tree identification during this guided walk at a Michigan state park.
While leaves are a useful tool for pinpointing tree species during other times of the year, wintertime forces ecologists and tree enthusiasts to use alternative methods.
That’s where the three Bs come in: buds, bark and branching.

Brandon Griffith, interpreter at Ludington State Park, will lead a roughly one-mile walk on the park’s tree identification pathway later this month.
“During the wintertime, we can’t as easily rely on the leaves to identify trees,” he said. “Instead, we will be taking a closer look at [identification] features such as tree buds,
