RICHMOND, Ky. (WKYT) - The Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program opened registration on Monday for fall applications as colder weather approaches and energy bills increase.
LIHEAP provides a one-time heating voucher to eligible households, intended to free up money for other expenses, according to Kentucky River Foothills Public Information Officer Karen Atkins. The federally funded program has been helping families across the nation keep warm for decades.
The benefit amount differs by family and is paid directly to the energy vendor, whether it’s for electric, natural gas, propane, coal, wood, or fuel oil costs.
“The program is there to kind of wrap their arms around that family to provide some extra support,” said Atkins.
