AUSTIN, Texas — A jury has been selected in the trial of Austin police officer Daniel Sanchez, who is accused of shooting and killing a man while on duty in 2022.
The courtroom was packed Monday morning as jury selection began in the case. Sanchez, who was indicted in December 2023 on a charge of deadly conduct, a third-degree felony, is accused in the November 2022 shooting death of 33-year-old Rajan Moonesinghe.
Proceedings began shortly after 10 a.m. with Judge Karen Sage presiding. Sanchez sat with his legal team as prosecutors from the Travis County District Attorney’s Office — Rob Drummond, Dextor Gilford and Raman Gill — presented a list of potential witnesses, including Austin police personnel.
Eighty-five prospective jurors filled the courtroom at the start of the day. Att
