Color, music and remembrance filled local spaces last week as residents of Lompoc and Santa Maria celebrated Día de los Muertos, the traditional Mexican holiday honoring loved ones who have died.
In Lompoc, the Lompoc Unified School District hosted its annual community celebration Sunday, at Lompoc High School, featuring traditional altars, student displays, live entertainment, face painting, a Catrina contest, arts and crafts, food booths, and Pan de Muerto with hot chocolate. Local organizations also hosted information tables and activities.
Assistant Superintendent Brian Jaramillo said the event was “about remembrance, love, and celebration of life,” adding that the district was excited to welcome students, families, and community members to participate.
