GEORGETOWN, Ky. (WKYT) - As Kentucky remembers former Governor Martha Layne Collins, who died this weekend at the age of 88, her legacy lives on in Scott County.
Her efforts to bring Toyota Motor Manufacturing to Scott County during her term as governor brought in thousands of jobs and changed the economics of a city, county and region.
Scott County Judge Executive Joe Covington recalls his senior year at Scott County High School in 1986 when Governor Collins delivered a speech at an assembly announcing Toyota was coming to town.
“At that time I had no idea of the impact of that announcement, how it would change our community forever,” Covington said.

Before Toyota, the population in Georgetown was 8,000 and the area was mostly farmland.
