Just a day after India’s monumental Women’s World Cup triumph in Navi Mumbai, former India skipper Shantha Rangaswamy has stirred a crucial debate — urging Harmanpreet Kaur to step down from captaincy and hand over the reins to Smriti Mandhana.

In an interview with PTI, Rangaswamy said the decision, while seemingly harsh in the aftermath of a historic maiden ODI World Cup triiumph , would ultimately serve the greater good of Indian cricket. She believes that Harmanpreet, 36, could extend her playing career and contribute far more effectively as a batter and fielder without the additional weight of captaincy.

“It’s overdue,” Rangaswamy said. “Harman as a batter and fielder is brilliant. But tactically, she can fumble at times. I feel she can contribute more if she’s without the burden
