WICHITA, Kan. (KWCH) - The trial began Monday for a man accused of shooting and seriously hurting a teen in a Walmart parking lot in May 2024.

At the Walmart in Goddard, according to court documents, the teen fired a gel blaster at Ruben Contreras’ daughter.

Contreras is accused of responding with a loaded gun, shooting the teen and possibly leaving him paralyzed.

Today, Contreras’ legal team argued that he and his daughter did not have to retreat after being shot at with the gel blaster, also known as an Orbeez gun.
