North Carolina Gov. Josh Stein announced Nov. 3 that the state is launching a $50 million recovery program to help Western North Carolina internet service providers rebuild and repair broadband infrastructure damaged or destroyed by Tropical Storm Helene. The September 2024 storm killed more than 100 people across the state and heavily damaged the region’s telecommunications infrastructure.

“With these investments, Western North Carolinians can stay connected and more easily get back on their feet — whether seeking resources, applying for a job online, starting a business, or going to school,” Stein said in a statement .
