VOLUSIA COUNTY, Fla. (WFLA)— A former Volusia County deputy was arrested and charged after writing bad checks to himself.

Douglas Meyer, 37, was charged with organized scheme to defraud after he wrote himself bad checks from one credit union to another.

Meyer would access the funds by exploiting the time it would take for the checks to clear, the Volusia Sheriff's Office said.

During this time, Meyer showed up to one of the credit unions in his uniform to ask for the hold on his deposited checks to be released.

"This ex-deputy's badge will be melted down," VSO said in a post on Facebook.

Meyer worked with VSO from 2020 to 2024 and again in 2025 until he resigned in August.

According to VSO, his credit union reported the fraud to the sheriff's office in September.
